Junior Eriannah Martinez, sophomore Lia Prairie and freshman Ashtynn Rosenbrock will participate in the IHSA 1A Girls State Track and Field Meet, May 22-24 at Eastern Illinois University.
Martinez won the 300-meter hurdles in a personal best 48.64. It will be her first trip to the state meet. Her time is the 13th fastest heading into the meet. Lily Bosnich, a junior from Peru (St. Bede), has the fastest qualifying time of 44.27.
Rosenbrock qualified for her first state track meet by winning the discus with a heave of 114’3”, which is a personal best. Her throw is the 15th best heading into the prelims. Senior Addison Stadsholt of Athens has the top throw from the sectional meet, winning with a throw of 137’4”. She set the state record earlier this year with a throw of 137’6”.
Prairie qualified for her second state meet. Like last year, it will be in two events. Last year, she finished 25th in the shot put with a throw of 33’8.75” and 27th in the discus with a toss of 89’4”. This year, she finished runner-up in the shot put and discus at the sectional meet to qualify. She threw the shot 36’7.75” to take second, while she finished second to Rosenbrock in the discus with a toss of 113’11”. She heads to the state meet with the 16th (discus) and 17th (shot put) best effort in the respective events.
The Comets finished the sectional meet with 73 points, which was good for fourth place out of 16 teams at the Westville Sectional.
Junior Alexis Schultz ran a 2:38.65 in the 800-meter run to take fourth, while freshman Haley Behrends took fourth in the 3,200-meter run with a time of 17:18.03. Senior Illiana Jeras sprinted to an eighth-place finish in the 100-meter dash, running a 13.83.
All four relays medaled. The 3,200-meter relay (Audra Prairie, Haley Behrends, Martinez, A. Schultz) posted a personal best 10:52.6 and placed third. The 400-meter relay (Katelyn Schultz, Chloee Moyer, Jeras and Sandra Gonzalez) took fifth with a personal best 57.41. The 800-meter relay (Martinez, Emilee Bernard, Jeras, Keala McCormick) overcame a handoff snafu that nearly led to a disqualification to finish fourth with a time of 2:02.02. The 1,600-meter relay (Prairie, K. Schultz, A. Schultz, Martinez) also finished fourth in a time of 4:44.35.
