For the second year in a row the Central High School music department finished third in the IHSA Sweepstakes. Campbell Hill (Trico) won with 840 points, while Oneida (ROWVA) was second with 697.5 points. The Comet music department finished with 570 points.

Last year, the Comet musicians accumulated 553.5 points.

The third-place finish is tied with last year’s groups for the best in Central music department history. The previous best was a fourth-place finish in 1975 and 1997.

Comet musicians capitalized the performances of five groups that performed in April, including three choirs (bass choir, mixed choir and treble choir) and two bands (concert band and jazz band). The groups accumulated 234 points for an IHSA Sweepstakes total of 570 points in Class C. Comet musicians totaled 336 points after solo and ensemble.

Music departments are broken into five classes: AA, A, B, C and D. Size of school is used to determine which class a department is placed.

Students participating in choir accumulated 231 points, which is the second in class C. Trico is first with 285 points. Choir members racked up 33 Division I ratings, 11 Division II ratings and one Division III ratings. Six of those Division I ratings were perfect scores, including three best of day designation.

Band members totaled 105 points, good for ninth in class C. Trico is first with 309 points. Eighteen groups performed and totaled 15 Division I ratings and three Division II ratings. There was also one Division I and one Division II ratings in piano events.

The IHSA included solo, ensemble, and organizational contests into a sweepstakes award. Students earn six points for each Division I rating, and three points for earning a Division II rating during solo and ensemble.
