Potential change in snow-day policy

December 18, 2020

Dear Parents and Guardians,

New flexibility has been given to us by Illinois State Board of Education in dealing with inclement weather and the use of emergency days while schools operate under pandemic guidelines.  We are allowed to incorporate remote learning days at Central CUSD #4 for the first five emergency days this year.

In the past if a snow day was used, an instructional day was added to the end of the school year.  This is a good opportunity for us to pilot the use of remote learning days instead of declaring snow days to see if this is how the district would like to proceed with emergency days in the future.

A remote learning day will allow us to provide an instructional day even if the buildings are not open due to weather or road conditions.  If inclement weather does not permit us to be in session, we will announce the use of a remote learning day.  On these days, students and teachers will work from home.  Teachers will post assignments and lessons that will allow for students to complete work while at home.  Teachers will be available via email for office hours as well.

The majority of our students have already been engaged in digital platforms for classes utilizing Google classroom when we had to switch to remote learning during a building closure.   Students will be expected to complete work assigned on a remote learning day.  We will try to monitor inclement weather in advance to allow us to send technology home with students that are in need.  For students that complete packets, additional time may be requested to complete the assigned work.

If you experience technical difficulty with a device or a specific program, please contact your teacher via email so that the technology department can be notified for assistance. As always, thank you for your continued cooperation with us this year. We know that it is a challenge for everyone.

Sincerely,

Tonya Evans
