2023-2024 Off to a great start!

We have been doing great in both Science and Social Studies this year.

In Science, our first unit dealt with Matter and Its Interactions. We learned about air and air pressure and then used that knowledge to create Air-Powered Derby Cars. Each class was filmed with the cars and we made videos which will be posted to our Google Classroom. Here are the links you can click to view at home:

Next up, we look to prove the Law of Conservation of Matter as we delve into more about Matter and Its Interactions in Unit 2.

In Social Studies, our first unit covered the original 13 Colonies. Facts we learned included who founded each colony, what each colony produced, and the gradual progression to the colonies we know prior to the Revolutionary War. In Unit 2, we move on to the reasons for the Revolutionary War, the types of government we had to choose from for the United States of America, and then research one of the Founding Fathers.

The End of the Year Approaches

We have done a great job in 4th Quarter. We got farther into both Social Studies and Science Units than we have for the past 3 years. The students all worked hard and did some incredible work on the projects.

Our Terrariums worked great. Some students even had additional plants growing from seeds that were in the dirt we dug in the field. Some of the students are choosing to bring his/her terrarium home. Be sure to find a place that has about half sunlight per day or they may burn up.

In Social Studies, we finished most of Unit 7. We covered nearly all the Civil War, compared the Union to the Confederacy, looked at several prominent Abolitionists, and even had time to compare/contrast General Ulysses S. Grant and General Robert E. Lee.

I HOPE EVERYONE HAS A GREAT SUMMER! Mr. Earls

We are already in 3rd Quarter.

In Science, we are finishing up the second part of Earth's Place in the Universe. We will be making another video. This time, it will feature constellations based on each student's birth month.

In Social Studies, we are working on an Interactive Notebook about all things MAPS (Unit 5). Next up, (Unit 6) we memorize the United States of America STATES AND CAPITALS. No notes will be allowed for the states/capitals test.

Mr. Earls

Welcome back to school!

I am Mr. Earls and will be your Science (all classes)/Social Studies Teacher (5A, 5B) for the 2022-2023 school year.

HAVE A GREAT SUMMER!

I had a great year and I hope you did too.

Mr. Earls

4th Quarter off to a slow start

Due to IAR testing before Spring Break and ISA testing after Spring Break, we had a bit of a slow start to 4th quarter. Also, we needed additional time to finish up our Science Gravity Projects after break, but boy was it worth it!

SCIENCE-

All three class videos are available to watch on all Science Google Classrooms. The students did a fantastic job and were very creative in their designs.

We are starting Unit 5 now. If will cover the Energy that all living organisms need to survive and thrive. We have at least three projects (food webs, growing plants in various conditions, and the terrariums) to complete before the end of the year.

SOCIAL STUDIES-

We have started Unit 7 - Civil War.

We will be working on the Civil War for most of April/May.  There are packets, highlighting, cut-outs, and interactive notebook pages.

We will be covering: tensions & causes that led to the Civil War, North vs. South - Economy/Culture/Battles, the Abolitionists, and the 16th President - Abraham Lincoln.

We will be having discussions about slavery, state's rights, and the political system of the time.  Additionally, we will explore any connection the students make to today's society within the context of the Illinois Social Studies Standards.

To date, we have already had several frank and earnest discussions about slavery and the differences between the political parties of the 1860's and those of today.

Mr. Earls

We finished Third Quarter strong!

In Social Studies, we finished Unit 5 and are almost done with Unit 6, 50 States & Capitals. We take the 4 Region tests this week.

In Science, we finished all the assignments, investigations, and testing for Unit 4 - Motion & Stability. We finish up over the next couple weeks (we may need a bit of time after break) with our Rube Goldberg Gravity Machines. YES, YOUR STUDENT IS TO BRING AN EGG TO CATAPULT AT THE WALL IN CLASS.

Third Quarter grades are finalized as of March 11, 2022. You can expect access to Skyward Report Cards by the next Friday.

Final Quarter, here we come!

We started Third Quarter strong!

In Social Studies, we are almost done with Unit 5 - Maps. We finish by making our own US and World maps, then take the test.

In Science, we are finishing up Unit 3 - Part 2 --Earth's Place in the Universe. We will be making a Constellation Video soon as our project.

If your student needs to miss school for any reason, please be sure to have them logging in to the Google Classrooms. The DAILY POST will let them know what we are working on and what I expect them to do each day.

Have a great day, Mr. Earls
