It is my pleasure to serve and work with your children here at Nash. Each year I am given the opportunity to get to know the unique qualities that each of the children brings to the class. The children and their qualities are combined to become a community that must learn to work together in a thoughtful and productive manner. This fact is emphasized in our first read aloud Oggie Cooder by Sarah Weeks. Many of our discussions focused on the character traits of the two main characters in the story. We have spent time considering which character we are most like. Some of the children are really finding out that being different needs to be praised rather than teased. Make the time to ask a fifth grader about the wonderful gifts of Oggie Cooder and the conniving qualities of Donnica Perfecto!
