Behind the door of B132

by Sharon Oncken

September 10, 2007

Open the door to classroom B132 and you will not find a typical classroom. The lighting is natural and lamplight and music including Pachelbel’s Cannon in D Major provide a soothing atmosphere. The music is set low and instruction and conversations are taking place over it.

Once through the door you will enter a vestibule created by arranged bookshelves and dividers. Here the students of B132 pickup the necessary papers and information that they will use throughout the day. There is even a mirror for last minute checks of hair before starting class.

The teachers’ desks are arranged so that students sit on stools surrounding the teacher in order to receive individual instruction or extra help. To one side of the raised desk area is a picture puzzle that students and faculty may solve each week and receive a sweet treat for their efforts.

Room B132 is sectioned off by curtains, dividers and area rugs creating a kitchen area, an instructional area, and a sensory or relaxation area; each is free of clutter, has individual lighting and is designed for the students comfort and maximum learning. Two computers are at the far end of the room for students to support individualized instruction. A television is near the sensory area allowing students to view instructional videos and DVD’s while in this area. The full kitchen is stocked lending itself to foods instruction.

The set procedures of the class and the atmosphere created in Room 132 provides its students with an optimal learning environment. Visitors are always welcome to view the classroom and join us in this unique educational process. Please call and make an appointment or check with the school office for times when the room is open for visitors to stop by and see it in person; you will not want to leave.
