Music Notes-September Edition

October 04, 2018

What’s New?

Hello!  My name is Kelly Gifford, and I am the new music teacher at Chebanse Elementary.  This is my third year teaching music, and I am super excited to be teaching at my Alma Mater.  I went to the central school district when I was younger, and graduated in 2012.  I continued my education at Millikin University where I received my B.M. in music education.

I am looking forward to the rest of the school year, and what it will bring.

In the Classroom

Kindergarten:  We just finished our unit on rhythm where we learned to keep a steady beat.  All students enjoyed playing rhythms using body percussion (snaps, claps, pats, and stomps), as well as, playing rhythm sticks for the first time.

1st Grade:  We just finished our unit on rhythm where we learned how to say different types of notes using the Kodaly Method (Ta, Ti-ti).  Everyone enjoyed using the rhythm sticks.

2nd Grade:  We just finished our unit on rhythm where the students learned to read and write rhythms.  The students enjoyed creating their own rhythm patterns, sharing them with the class, and being able to play them on rhythm sticks.

3rd Grade and 4th Grade:  Everyone in the two grades just finished their unit on note names and symbols for the treble clef.  We learned the lines and the spaces on the treble clef, and learned to visually identify them.  This will come in great help when the 4th graders do recorders in January.

Composer of the Month

Johann Sebastian Bach

For the month of September, the students learned about a composer named Johann Sebastian Bach.  They learned that he wrote music for a church, he had 20 children, was from Germany, born in the 1600s before they had electricity, and he played some pretty cool instruments.  The students made a wall outside the music room full of facts about him, had the opportunity to listen to some of his music on a record player, and learned about the violin.  The students even were able to pluck the strings on the violin to finish the lesson.
