Greetings!

Welcome to First Grade...Room 1B!

My name is Mrs. Spittal.  This is my fourteenth year of teaching...thirteenth year in this district.  However, this is my fifth year teaching first grade.  My previous years were spent teaching in the Pre-K program.

I was born and raised in Bourbonnais.  I graduated high school from B.B.C.H.S, continued my education at Olivet Nazarene University with a B.S. in Early Childhood Education and then obtained my Master's degree in Curriculum and Instruction, also from Olivet.

I am married to my husband, Ryan, of twelve years and have three great kids...Jack, 8 years, and Kate, 5 years and, our baby girl, Quinn, 14 months...who remind me that being a parent is the hardest but most rewarding job there is.

My hope as a teacher of young children is to help each child enjoy learning. I want school, especially my classroom, to be a fun, safe environment where success is experienced daily.

Listed below are the expectations of a first grader along with the spelling words for the month and any important dates.  If you should have any questions or concerns please feel free to send a note with your child, e-mail me at jspittal@cusd4.org or phone me at 697-2642.

Thank you for the privilege of teaching your child!

Summer can be fun and educational!

Dear parents/guardians,

Although your child is looking forward to the care-free days of summer, it is very important that you set aside 20-30 minutes per day over the summer for your child to read and review work that is fun and exciting.

I have listed some websites that have helpful tips and tools for you as parents, and some really fun, interactive websites for your child (they will be learning and not thinking of it as studying or homework! )

www.babycenter.com

www.greatschools.org

www.momshomeroom.msn.com

www.pbskids.org

www.spellingcity.com

www.starfall.com

www.education.com

www.abcya.com

www.funschool.kaboose.com

www.aaamath.com

Please remember that for math games you can use dice, cards, flashcards, and other items found around your home.  For spelling and handwriting practice, have your child write in different colors, or in sand or shaving cream.  If you want additional websites, just Google “preparing for second grade,” “second grade math,” second grade reading,” etc.  If the work is too challenging, Google “first grade math,” or “first grade reading.”

I hope you and your soon-to-be-second-grader have a relaxing and fun summer, but remember….never stop learning.

Congratulations to your child and his/her classmates…the CLASS OF 2022!

Have a safe and relaxing summer vacation!  It has been an honor to be your child's first grade teacher...ENJOY!
