Central students recognized by Kankakee Area Career Center

Smith named KACC Student of the Year

Two Central High School seniors were recognized by the Kankakee Area Career Center (KACC) for their efforts in their designated areas of study. KACC held its awards ceremony on Thursday, May 4 at Kankakee Community College.

Senior Gabrielle Smith received the highest designation, as she was named KACC Student of the Year. The designation carries a $2,000 scholarship and a plaque. In order to be nominated for student of the year, Smith had to be named student of the quarter once – which she was during the second quarter. She also had to submit a written document detailing her future plans and how the career center has affected her. The nominations were sent to a committee who made the final selections.

Smith also received a $500 Spaulding/Lawrence Memorial Scholarship.

Smith is a second-year medical terminology student. She was also named student of the year in medical terminology.

After graduation, Smith plans on majoring in nursing while attending the University of North Alabama.

Smith is the granddaughter of Suzanne Smith of Clifton.

Senior Ben Hoogstraat earned a $500 Spaulding/Lawrence Memorial Scholarship.

Hoogstraat is a second-year computer technology student. He is planning on attending Southern Illinois University-Edwardsville and majoring in computer management and information systems.

Hoogstraat is the son of Traci and Arnold Annis of Clifton and Kris and Mendy Hoogstraat of Ashkum.

Junior Kaitlin Bowers was recognized for her fourth-place finish in crime scene investigation at the Skills USA State Competition.

Bowers is a first-year law enforcement student.

Bowers is the daughter of Christine Bowers of Chebanse and Duane Bowers of Clifton.
