Tdap Booster Requirement for Grades 6-12 for 2013-2014 School Year
The State of Illinois has revised the new Tdap requirement for school children. Up until 2012, the State required children to have four (4) or more doses of DTaP/DTP (diphtheria, tetanus, pertussis) before entering kindergarten, with a Td (tetanus) booster required before freshman year of high school. This requirement has now changed.
In addition to the four (4) doses required for kindergarten, a Tdap booster is now required for all students in grades 6th through 12th. This will need to be completed before the 2013-2014 school year.
The rule states:
- Any child entering sixth grade shall show proof of receiving one (1) dose of Tdap (tetanus, diphtheria, acellular pertussis) vaccine regardless of the interval since the last DTaP, DT or Td dose.
- Students entering grades 7 through 12 who have not already received Tdap are required to receive one (1) Tdap dose regardless of the interval since the last DTaP, DT or Td dose.
If you are unsure whether your child has received the Tdap booster, please contact your child’s healthcare provider. We would strongly suggest that you do not wait too long before checking into this matter. If you will be taking your child to the doctor for a sport physical this semester, use the opportunity to get the Tdap booster done.
