NEWSFLASH FOR 3C

December is going to be a full and fast month.......

The month of December is going to go by like a flash if it is anything like November! It is going to be a short month because of our Christmas Break, so it will then be a very, very busy month.

Here is an overview of what will take place this month:

* Reading, the theme for the next series is entitled,"Incredible Stories".

*The next four stories are: "Dogzilla" ; "The Mysterious Giant of Barletta"; "Raising Dragons"; and "The Garden of Abdul Gasazi".

The Comprehension skills that we will cover through these stories are fantasy and realism; following directions; drawing conclusions; and story structure.

The Reading strategies are to evaluate; question; predict/infer; monitor/clarify; phonics/decoding. (Ask your child what these mean and they should be able to tell you.)

In Grammar, we will focus on possessive nouns; proofreading for apostrophes, identifying verbs; using exact verbs; present time; subject-verb agreement; past time and future time; and keeping tenses consistent.

We will also be focusing on these information and study skills: using newspapers; using an atlas; using the encyclopedia; using charts, tables, and graphs.

In Math, our focus in Chapter 5 is Time and Money. This is something that we all need more of, right? (ha) I know that the students will enjoy this chapter. We will continue to review regrouping, especially with 3 digit numbers. If you can practice with your child at home, that would be great! Practice and repetition will definitely help bring understanding.

In Writing, we have been learning several good writing skills to become good expository essays. We will continue with this every week.

In Science, we will be learning about the solar system and all of the planets.

In Social Studies, our class is learning about map skills and how to utilize a map. They are finding it very fun to discover how much there is to reading a map! :)
