Maintaining Good Reading Habits

by Donna Wine

Parents can make good reading habits easy for children. Here are some suggestions for maintaining reading and book-sharing practices in your home:

  • Make weekly visits to the library.
  • Keep plenty of reading materials around the house: newspapers, magazines, catalogues, books, etc.
  • Use TV selectively and limit computer and video game use.
  • Subscribe to children's magazines.
  • Use extra reading time as a reward for your child.
  • Read and share books together.
  • Pack books and other reading materials when going on trips.
  • Encourage reading related activities such as museum visits, completing word games and puzzles, finding words or letters in signs, etc.
  • Register for special reading events at the library such as the summer reading program.
