WHAT'S HAPPENING?

3C is a happening class!!

The 3C class is a Happening Class!

This is what has been happening so far this school year....

Math: We have completed Chapter 2 which involves working on place values as well as Ordering Numbers and Rounding Numbers. Ask your child what “ten” would you round 15 to. We are working with much larger numbers than they have before and have to identify what place value is from ones to 100 thousands. This is a little intimidating, but we will soon become experts at it. Next we will be going onto adding and subtracting larger numbers.

Math Facts: It would be very helpful if you could work on the math addition and subtraction facts with your child. Perhaps you could make up some flash cards with all the math facts on them and then take just 5 minutes each night to go through them. The repetition is a very helpful way to learn math facts for children.

Reading: We have just finished Theme 1 of our Reading series which are all stories about different types of adventure. We also have learned about different types of poetry and have even written our own poems! :)

We  are also beginning our guided reading groups.  These are small groups of the students reading other books in their reading level which helps them in developing the fluency and expression in reading, as well as working on the reading strategies that we learn as a whole class.   This is a great fine-tuning skill for each of the students to become better readers.

AR Points-  In all of the 3rd grades, the AR point requirement for the first quarter is 4 points for the classroom. The party goal is always 5 points higher, so it is 9 points this quarter. I have been told that the "party" will be a popcorn party. YUM!!

Writing:  Each week we are learning about writing paragraphs for our expository writing.  We are learning more about how to write a proper focus sentence, filling our body paragraphs with detail sentences, and closing with a wrap up paragraph that brings the whole paper back together.

Word Wall Words: Each month we will be learning 14 new word wall words. By the end of 3rd grade we will have learned 110 new words. We do several difference types of activities to learn how to correctly identify and spell these words each week.

Spelling:  This year we have begun a new Spelling format.  The students seem to really like it and it provides many activities in which to learn how to spell the new list each week. Your child will bring home their new list of words each week on Thursday to study at home. Please watch for that list and help your child to practice the words each week.

ISAT: This is the first year that the students will be taking the test which takes place in March. I will be talking to them about it from the beginning so that they will be familiar with it and will be prepared for it when that day comes. My goal is to make it a very positive experience.

Blue Homework Folder:The students will bring home this folder every night with homework sheets and other information such as newsletters, notes, past work, etc. It is very important that you check this folder each night. After any homework is completed, including the required 15 minutes of reading, please sign this sheet and make sure that your child returns the folder to his/her book bag. This is the child’s responsibility to ask you to sign the sheet. They will receive a stamp each time when returning the signed sheet each day.:) If the sheet is forgotten or not signed, the student must flip their card on the consequence chart. :(

*Thank you for all that you do for your child in assuring that they will be the best student they can be. I am so pleased to be able to work along with you and your child to achieve that goal.*
