COST in the News

by Eva McGill

February 24, 2009

COST is nearing the end of another grant project.  The current project and competition is called Operation Teen Safe Driver and is sponsored by Allstate and the Illinois Department of Transportation.  COST has been busy spreading the message of safe driving.  Have you seen the signs on old Route 45?

On Friday, February 20, COST sponsored a Dead Day to make Central students reflect upon a couple of statistics.  Every 14 minutes someone in the United States dies in a car crash.  Every day 14 teens die in a car crash - that's 415 a month and 5000 a year.  They are hard statistics to wrap your brain around so COST brought it to life.  On Friday, every 14 minutes the bell rang and a car crash sound effect was played.  At the same time, the "Grim Reaper" went into a classroom and pulled a student out.  The student put on a t-shirt that said "Drive Safely Life is Priceless" and a tear was painted on their face.  From that point on they were "dead" for the rest of the day.  By 2:00pm 26 students had "died".  This happens every day in this country - every 14 minutes!

COST has been busy with a number of other projects and have a few projects in the works.  We were pleased to have the Daily Journal come to our assembly on Friday with a reporter, photographer, and videographer.  Please check out the article and video in the attached link.

Thank you for all the teachers, students, and community members that have helped us with our various projects and have supported us in our efforts.  And remember to ....

Put it on. Put it away. Just slow down. Say no way.
