CO$T: PRICELE$$

Who we are...

by Eva McGill

August 25, 2009

CO$T stands for Clifton Central Comets Operation Safer Teens and we came into being during the 2007-2008 school year thanks to grant money from IDOT and Allstate Insurance.  We have made it our mission to make CHS drivers safer drivers.  At the same time, we want to encourage our community to be safer drivers as well.

This year we have prize money to spend from earning FIRST place in our region for the 2009 Operation Teen Safe Driver campaign.  First place earned us $3750 to continue our program plus our students had the opportunity to attend the Ford Skills for Life: Ride & Drive at US Cellular Field in Chicago.  Everyone had a great time and learned a lot about the skills necessary for safe driving.

COST also earned THIRD place in the U.S. Department of Transportation National Youth Traffic Safety Month: Rural Youth Traffic Safety Message Competition in December of 2008.  This competition awarded us $500 to continue our safe driving message because we are in a rural community with rural driving issues.  The cool part?!  We were one of only ten schools in the nation that received this grant!  (That's right only ten schools in the whole  U.S.A.!)  All ten schools were in competition with each other to impress the judges and make our roadways safer and possibly earn First Place.  Even better?!  Because we placed in the top three, we earned a trip to Washington, DC to meet the Secretary of the Department of Transportation and a trip to Nashville, TN to speak at the Lifesavers Conference.  Check out the great things our school and other are doing at: www.noys.org/YouthTrafSafe/Rural.html

CO$T would like to thank you for all of your support in the past and we encourage you to check in to see what we're up to as we go through the school year.  And remember to "Put it on.  Put it away.  Just slow down.  Say no way!"
