Running to Remember...Bethany Cailteux

Central 5K Memorial Scholarship Race

by Pam Smith

March 17, 2009

Bethany Marie Cailteux was a graduate of the Central High School Class of 2004. Her life here on earth ended on September 26, 2004, when a young man driving under the influence of drugs hit her car head-on, while driving 97 miles per hour in the wrong lane.  She was the loving daughter of Dean and Teresa Cailteux, and devoted little sister to Brittany Cailteux of Clifton, and adored big sister of Brock Cailteux at home. During her short 18 years, her high-spirited, caring personality and engaging smile endeared her to all who met and knew her.

While attending school, she participated in softball and was a member of the high school’s Students Against Destructive Decisions (SADD) chapter. Bethany’s caring attitude and desire to serve others was evident in all that she did. She was enrolled in Kankakee Area Career Center’s nursing program her junior and senior years of high school, interning in the emergency rooms at both St. Mary’s Hospital in Kankakee and Iroquois Memorial Hospital in Watseka. She was enrolled at Kankakee Community College (KCC) to pursue her dream of being a nurse at the time of her death.

Throughout high school, Bethany worked at “The Loft” restaurant in Ashkum, where she garnered many loyal friends and customers. Upon obtaining her lifesaving license and turning 16, she also became a lifeguard at the Clifton Centennial Pool. Her vibrant, caring, empathetic nature allowed her to make new friends wherever she went, and she was well-known by students throughout a three county area.

In remembrance of Bethany Cailteux, the Central 5K Memorial Scholarship Committee invite everyone to the 5K race that will be taking place on July 11th at the Clifton Park.  Come one, come as a group to have a good time by running or walking the streets of Clifton.  Proceeds from the race will go towards a scholarship in Bethany's name to a graduating senior of 2010.  (Juniors:  If you participate in the race, you will receive extra points toward winning the scholarship.)
