The Central High School Boys Football team continues to make history by fighting their way into the Illinois Class 2A Final Four!!!! The semifinal game will take place this Saturday night November 22 at 5 p.m. at our beautiful Comet field. The Comets will face off with the Elmhurst Immaculate Conception Knights who have a record of 8-4 who beat Bureau Valley 41-8 in last Saturday’s quarterfinal action. Our Comets advanced to the semifinals by beating Bushnell Prairie City Avon Co-Op in a fabulous game last Saturday evening 20-7. The Comets scored first with a 3-yard touchdown plow from Jarrett Hixson at the 5:25 mark of the first quarter. The Comet defense stood mightily against the Spartans and neither team scored for the rest of the first half. That play came in the third quarter where Bushnell was finally able to score a touchdown with a 2-yard run from Logan Lovejoy. Bushnell promptly kicked for the extra point and took the lead 7-6. The crowd was going wild. Our Comets couldn’t come so far and lose by one point!! Did Bushnell think that they were a second half team? Who is the second half team? That’s right. We are the second half team. Even though Central couldn’t get any points on the board in the third quarter, the Comet defense kept Bushnell from scoring any more points. The Comet D defended their goal line with a vengeance. David Payne got the Comet offense going in the fourth quarter starting out with a 15 yard run. Trent Faulkner passed back to back completions to get the Comets within the 20 yard line. Then Trent connected with Doug Bell for an 11 yard score on a rollout pass. Then the game got really good. Bushnell fumbled on the kickoff after the touchdown. With the ball safely back in our possession, the Comets marched down the field in eleven plays on another rollout pass from Trent to Kyle Frake from four yards out. The Spartans then fumbled on their next possession and the ball was ours. With the time clock ticking away, the Comets knew that they had won the game and advanced to the final four. The Comet fans stormed the field to congratulate our awesome football Comets, Coach Spooner, and his assistant coaches on a hard fought game on a bitter cold night.
So, show your Comet spirit and show your support for our Comet Football Team any way you can! Tie blue streamers on your trees, put up posters and signs in your yards and businesses, write on your van windows with white shoe polish, put blue and white lights out on the porch or the trees. Let EIC know that we are in it to win it. EIC’s record doesn’t seem that great but they play some big suburban catholic schools. The Varsity Football Comets have won every home game since September 28, 2007, so let’s keep that streak going. This is Coach Spooner’s first trip to the final four. Let’s help him continue on that trip to Memorial Stadium in Champaign the day after Thanksgiving with a great bunch of young men that our entire district should be proud to have representing us! GO BIG BLUE!!
