Everyone is ready to bake, especially Katie

Shrovetide Festival was fun.

My World History Honors class had fun the other day when we swapped rooms with Ms. Fink, the foods teacher, so that we could have our own Shrovetide Festival. Shrovetide was the name for the Russian festival that kicked off Lent. (our version is Mardi Gras!) Students read about Russia's traditions and toured web sites that told stories and explained recipes. They also read about the games that were played such as the flipping pancakes contests. We decided to have our own flipping pancakes contest which got pretty intense. The overall winners were Katelyn Gigl and Jared Gigl - they looked like pros.

It was fun to watch the students work together and make pancakes, or blini, borscht soup, and pirozkhis, which were crescent rolls with sausage patties tucked inside. We decided to add a cake to the mix, which wasn't exactly part of Russia's list of foods, but we all like cake so what the heck! Clean up went surprisingly well too..

For all of you who get stressed when there are three or four people in the kitchen when you are trying to cook....imagine 32! It was crowded. Attached is a slide show of some of the activities and preparation! Shrovetide Festival
